Our goal in building our motorsports and automotive
engineering labs is to mirror the shops of the country's best race
teams. In addition to our existing campus lab facilities in the
Smith Building and C.C. Cameron Applied Research Center, plans are
in place to build a dedicated motorsports lab on the university's
new north campus.
A priority for our labs is that they
be stocked with industry-standard motorsports equipment. To that
end, we have acquired the items listed on the page and the list
continues to grow. Such state-of-the-art equipment provides our
students with the tools they need to learn the basics of motorsports
and automotive engineering, and most importantly, to develop this
expertise before graduation.
UNC Charlotte equipment and
capabilities include:
Dynojet chassis
dynamometer
Superflow engine
dynamometer
Roehrig shock
dynamometer
Pi and CDS data
acquisition systems
Superflow bench
Engine Wash
State-of-the-art
machining equipment including Wire EDM, precision grinders, high
speed machines, etc.
Computerized
scales
Dimensional and
surface metrology equipment including five optical and touch probe
coordinate measuring machines, multiple surface roughness
profilometers and a number of handheld metrology tools
Fluent
aerodynamics simulation software
High-speed
computational computer lab
Adams car
software
Mitchell

Computational
fluid dynamics software
Being in Charlotte,
the College of Engineering also has access to the labs and equipment
of a number of area race shops.
